Battery storage for care homes

Solar makes free electricity while the sun is up. A battery lets you keep some of it for the evening — and, just as importantly, keeps the lights, lifts and life-critical equipment on if the grid goes down.

Two jobs, one investment

For a care home, a battery earns its place in two ways. The first is financial: it stores surplus solar generated during the day and releases it in the early evening, when generation has faded but demand is still high and grid prices are at their worst. That lifts your self-consumption and shrinks the amount of expensive peak-rate electricity you import. With a smart tariff, a battery can also charge overnight on cheap off-peak rates and discharge during the costly daytime peak.

The second job is resilience, and in a care setting this can matter more than the savings. A correctly configured solar-plus-battery system, with the right changeover equipment, can keep essential circuits running through a power cut.

Not every circuit needs backing up, but some absolutely do. We work with your team to identify the essential loads and design the system to protect them:

Safety comes first: chemistry matters

In a building where evacuation can take time and residents may have limited mobility, battery safety is non-negotiable. For care settings we specify lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries rather than NMC chemistry. LFP is far more thermally stable and is the appropriate choice where there are vulnerable occupants. Batteries are sited in a suitable, ventilated location, away from escape routes, with the detection and isolation your fire strategy requires.

How big a battery do you need?

Bigger is not better. An oversized battery sits half-empty and never pays back; an undersized one fills by lunchtime and spills the rest to the grid. We model your real consumption against your solar generation to find the sweet spot — usually enough to soak up the typical daily surplus and cover the evening shoulder, with backup capacity sized to your essential loads.

Add it now or later

You do not have to install a battery on day one. Many homes start with solar panels, watch the monitoring data for a few months, then add storage once the real generation and demand pattern is clear. We design solar systems to be battery-ready so adding storage later is straightforward and cost-effective.

Working with smart, time-of-use tariffs

A battery does its best work when it is paired with the right electricity tariff. Many commercial suppliers now offer time-of-use pricing, where electricity is cheap overnight and expensive during the daytime and early-evening peak. A battery can charge from your own solar by day, and on dull winter days top up from the grid overnight at the low rate, then discharge through the costly peak hours. For a care home running heavy daytime and evening loads, that shift away from peak-rate import can add up to a substantial annual saving on top of what the solar alone delivers.

Monitoring you can actually use

Every system we install comes with monitoring that shows, in plain terms, how much you are generating, storing, using and importing. Your management or finance team gets a clear view of the savings as they accrue, and we can set up alerts so any underperformance is spotted quickly. For multi-site groups, we can consolidate monitoring across your portfolio so you can compare homes and prioritise future investment with real data rather than guesswork.

Will a battery disrupt the home during installation?

Battery installation is typically quicker and less intrusive than the solar work itself, as most of it happens in a plant room or a suitable utility space rather than on the roof. As with everything we do, we plan the work around your routines, keep walkways clear, and brief your team so staff and residents know what to expect and when. There is no need to vacate the building.

Funding a battery

Batteries can be included in the same funding package as your solar — whether that is outright purchase, asset finance, or a Power Purchase Agreement. Charity-owned homes may also be able to fund storage through grant routes. We will set out the options clearly so the resilience benefit is weighed alongside the numbers.
