Why care homes get more from solar than almost anyone

The financial case for solar rests on one number: how much of the electricity you generate you actually use yourself. Power you consume on site saves the full import price — often around 25–30p per kWh. Power you export earns far less under the Smart Export Guarantee. So a good system is sized to match your demand, not to chase export.

Heating, hot water, commercial laundry, kitchens, lifts, nurse-call systems, lighting and a growing amount of resident medical equipment run every hour of every day. That steady baseload sits underneath your solar generation, so a large share of what the panels produce is absorbed immediately — typically 40–60% across the year, rising to 80–90% in the summer months.

Most residential homes of 15–50 beds suit a system in the region of 25–60 kWp; larger nursing homes with dementia care and heavier laundry and equipment loads often justify 30–80 kWp or more. Generating your own electricity reduces the grid energy your building draws, which directly improves its Energy Performance Certificate rating. With commercial minimum energy standards tightening over the coming years, that headroom matters. Just as importantly, families increasingly choose a home partly on its values — visible sustainability is a genuine differentiator, and one worth sharing with relatives, local authorities and your community.

Roof not suitable? There are still options

If your roof is shaded, structurally limited or simply too small, we can look at ground-mounted arrays where you have land, or a carport-mounted system that doubles as covered parking and an EV-charging canopy. We will always tell you honestly if solar is not the right fit for a particular site.

Pairing solar with battery and EV charging

Adding battery storage lets you push self-consumption higher and keeps critical systems running during a power cut — a meaningful resilience benefit in a setting with vulnerable residents. Many homes also add EV charge points for staff and visitor vehicles, powered by daytime solar. We can phase these so the budget is spread over time.

Does solar work in British weather?

Yes — and far better than most people expect. Solar panels generate from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so they produce useful electricity on the bright-but-cloudy days that make up much of the British year. Output is naturally lower in December and January and highest from late spring to early autumn, but a care home draws power every single day, so there is always demand waiting to use what the roof produces. Maintenance, warranties and peace of mind

A solar system has no moving parts, so day-to-day maintenance is minimal. Panels are self-cleaning in ordinary rainfall, and a typical system needs little more than an occasional visual check and an inverter inspection. Panels carry performance warranties of 25 to 30 years, inverters are typically warranted for 10 to 12 years and often longer with an extension, and the whole installation is covered by our workmanship guarantee. Live monitoring flags any drop in performance early, so issues are caught before they cost you generation.
